Year 6 were bowled over by a special visitor on Thursday morning - and it wasn't an elf.
Tom Farrell, an ex-Dovedale pupil and author of Tim Oliver Evacuee, came to talk to the children about his fascinating life and also read from his latest book. He brought his lovely daughter, Sarah with him and shared some incites into the events of his life, including:
- A childhood growing up in Mossely Hill, train-spotting and eventually being evacuated to the countryside at 6 years old, just before he was meant to be starting at Dovedale Primary.
- Life in an a strange countryside setting - a new 'country family', vile teachers and wanting Germans to bomb the village school.
- Becoming an Olympic athlete, a teacher a, a Vicor and, eventually, an author!
Tom brought some photos, posters and artifacts that he had accumulated during his life and even shared out some WW2 shrapnel and gun shells for the children to handle. He talked about being an author at 85 years old, and really inspired our children and teachers who were mesmerised by his fascinating tales. Incidentally, the shrapnel belonged to Mary Berry's husband, and was passed down to Tom's daughter, Sarah - who is her daughter-in-law! What an exciting morning it was, and the children loved it!
Thank you Tom and Sarah for giving your time, and signing copies of your books for the children.
